Dr. Murali P Vettath is a new generation coronary surgeon – one of the handful of surgeons in the world, performing 100% of his coronary surgeries on beating heart without the use of Heart Lung Machine.
He has been a pioneer and protagonist of this “cutting edge technology” and has trained numerous surgeons and anesthesiologists in the field of cardiac surgery.
He has 20 years post M.Ch experience in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, including 11 years as Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Has performed 5000 plus open heart surgeries with more than 2500 of them on beating heart for coronary artery bypass surgery. He has performed the last 2000 OPCABs at the present institution with a mortality of less than 0.5%.He has had only one conversion to the pump in the last 1600 odd OPCABs.
He has been trained in coronary artery surgery from Australia, Holland and Paris and has transferred technology to Bangladesh in the year 1999. He had stayed in that country for three years set up two cardiac centers with a contingent of twenty doctors and a hundred nurses from India. And trained cardiac surgeons, cardiologist , cardiac anaesthesiologists, cardiac nurses and paramedical staff in that country.
After his stint in Dhaka, Bangladesh , he has now settled in Kozhikode, his home town, at Malabar Institute of Medical sciences, Kozhikode since 2002.
He had established Cardiac surgery in this city and in the short span of six years has brought up MIMS Institute of Cardiac sciences as a Bench Mark in Cardiac surgery, especially – Beating Heart surgery – in India and Internationally.
At MIMS, he has performed nearly 3500 cardiac procedures and more than 2000 CABGs on beating heart- OPCAB procedures with less than 0.5% mortality. This center has now been acclaimed as – Centre of Excellence in OPCAB (off pump coronary artery bypass) surgery in the country, which gives training to cardiac surgeons from India and abroad.
He had come to Kozhikode when all the cardiac patients used to go to either Coimbatore or Kochi or even Chennai for their cardiac problems. After establishing this center and after bringing both adult and pediatric cardiac surgery under one roof, along with interventional cardiology, he has been instrumental in developing MIMS as a bench mark in OFF Pump CABG in the world.
He had also started the “ SAVE A HEART – SAVE A LIFE PROGRAMME’, where poor patients are provided hundred percent free CABG – bypass procedure. He has already operated more than fifty such eligible patients, and fifty more are to follow.
He had also organized various programmes to bring awareness to people on cardiac problems and to prevent heart disease, and had organized public marches on the World Heart Day in 2006, 2007 and 2008,with more than 2000 participants from all walks of life. Also conducted Heart exhibitions in MIMS,Calicut , and various other programmes to make people aware of the dangers of Heart disease.
He has invented and developed numerous devices for performing beating heart surgery, which has been published in International journals .He has also developed indigenous techniques for performing this procedure with excellent results.
He has also been a keen researcher in cardiac surgery with many inventions and innovations to his credit.
Some of his inventions and developments are as follows;
Ø
Vettath’s anastomotic
obturator (VAO) which is used for performing the proximal
anastomosis of
the vein graft to the
aorta without using the side clamp - Patented in India
Ø
Vettaths technique of performing Top end anastamosis of vein graft using VAO.
Ø
Vettaths’s blower and blower mister.
Ø
Vettath’s modification
of aorto-coronary shunt
Ø
Vettath’s –JP
cardioplegia device
Ø
Vettath’s technique of
long mammary patch anastomosis.
Ø
Vettath’s Modification of the use of IABP in OPCAB.
He was the one to perform the first Beating heart surgery in Bangladesh in the year 1999.
He has received numerous awards from different organistaions in India and abroad for his contribution to cardiac surgery. |
