Career summary

Dr. Murali P Vettath is a new generation coronary surgeon – one of the handful of surgeons in the world, performing 100% of his coronary surgeries on beating heart without the use of Heart Lung Machine.

He has been a pioneer and protagonist of this “cutting edge technology” and has trained numerous surgeons and anesthesiologists in the field of cardiac surgery.

He has 20 years post M.Ch experience in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, including 11 years as Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Has performed 5000 plus open heart surgeries with more than 2500 of them on beating heart for coronary artery bypass surgery. He has performed the last 2000 OPCABs at the present institution with a mortality of less than 0.5%.He has had only one conversion to the pump in the last 1600 odd OPCABs.

He has been trained in coronary artery surgery from Australia, Holland and Paris and has transferred technology to Bangladesh in the year 1999. He had stayed in that country for three years set up two cardiac centers with a contingent of twenty doctors and a hundred nurses from India. And trained cardiac surgeons, cardiologist , cardiac anaesthesiologists, cardiac nurses and paramedical staff in that country.

After his stint in Dhaka, Bangladesh , he has now settled in Kozhikode, his home town, at Malabar Institute of Medical sciences, Kozhikode since 2002.

He had established Cardiac surgery in this city and in the short span of six years has brought up MIMS Institute of Cardiac sciences as a Bench Mark in Cardiac surgery, especially – Beating Heart surgery – in India and Internationally.

At MIMS, he has performed nearly 3500 cardiac procedures and more than 2000 CABGs on beating heart- OPCAB procedures with less than 0.5% mortality. This center has now been acclaimed as – Centre of Excellence in OPCAB (off pump coronary artery bypass) surgery in the country, which gives training to cardiac surgeons from India and abroad.

He had come to Kozhikode when all the cardiac patients used to go to either Coimbatore or Kochi or even Chennai for their cardiac problems. After establishing this center and after bringing both adult and pediatric cardiac surgery under one roof, along with interventional cardiology, he has been instrumental in developing MIMS as a bench mark in OFF Pump CABG in the world.

He had also started the “ SAVE A HEART – SAVE A LIFE PROGRAMME’, where poor patients are provided hundred percent free CABG – bypass procedure. He has already operated more than fifty such eligible patients, and fifty more are to follow.

He had also organized various programmes to bring awareness to people on cardiac problems and to prevent heart disease, and had organized public marches on the World Heart Day in 2006, 2007 and 2008,with more than 2000 participants from all walks of life. Also conducted Heart exhibitions in MIMS,Calicut , and various other programmes to make people aware of the dangers of Heart disease.

He has invented and developed numerous devices for performing beating heart surgery, which has been published in International journals .He has also developed indigenous techniques for performing this procedure with excellent results.

He has also been a keen researcher in cardiac surgery with many inventions and innovations to his credit. Some of his inventions and developments are as follows;

 Ø      Vettath’s anastomotic obturator (VAO) which is used for  performing the proximal anastomosis of      
          the vein graft to the aorta without using  the side clamp - Patented in India

Ø      Vettaths technique of performing Top end anastamosis of vein graft using VAO.

Ø      Vettaths’s blower and blower mister.

Ø      Vettath’s modification of aorto-coronary shunt

Ø      Vettath’s –JP cardioplegia device

Ø      Vettath’s technique of long mammary patch anastomosis.

Ø      Vettath’s Modification of the use of IABP in OPCAB.

He was the one to perform the first Beating heart surgery in Bangladesh in the year 1999.

He has received numerous awards from different organistaions in India and abroad for his contribution to cardiac surgery.  

Awards:

Received the INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVERS AWARD for HEALTH EXCELLANCE , during the International Achievers summit at Bangkok. 2009.

Received the Membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences – MNAMS , from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi , in 2009 for his significant contribution towards the advancement of Medical science.

CHIKITSAK RATAN AWARD presented by the Nations Economic for Health and Educational growth, New Delhi for “Excellence in the Chosen field of activity”, on the occasion of the 28th National Seminar on “INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS & NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT”, held on 16th Feb 2009, at New Delhi.

Diploma in respect of 2000 OUTSTANDING INTELLECTUALS OF THE 21ST CENTURY, by the INTERNATIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL CENTER , CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND, in Feb 2008

Received the GLORY OF INDIA AWARD from the India International Friendship society on the 9th Jan 2008, from Delhi. This is awarded to eminent doctors this year, who has contributed significantly in their field of specialization, and who had upheld the glory of India in this country and helped in achieving Global friendship.

He had received the title of MELVIN JONES FELLOW from the Lions International foundation, for his dedicated and humanitarian service to the people.

Testimony of honor – “SARVSHRI” - & gold medal for Cardiac Surgery awarded for the year 2003, by the College of Management in collaboration with Indian Council of Management Executives, Special Executive Magistrates/ Officers Society and the Business Executive

THE KNIGHT OF THE MILLENIUM & conferred the title ‘SIR’ and awarded gold medal in Cardiac Surgery for the Year 2004.

His name has been included in - 8th Edition of MARQUIS WHO’S WHO IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, 2005 for his invention, which has been published from New Jersey, USA, which is a rare distinction for any one from India. (This is a reference book in more than two housand libraries around the world.)

His name has also been included in 23RD EDITION OF MARQUIS WHO’S WHO IN THE WORLD PUBLISHED IN NOVEMBER 2005. This will chronicle nearly 45 thousand global leaders in every significant field of endeavor from over 250 nations, these included names like Kofi Annan etc. These books are maintained as reference books in more than 2000 libraries around the world. (which includes Havard University, Smithsonian Institution, Bank of Italy, Business Week & thousand others).

 

He has also conducted live workshops on off pump CABG in Trivandrum, and Timosoara Romania

 LIVE SURGERIES :

Performed two open heart procedure- Workshop –OPCAB- off pump coronary artery bypass surgeries procedures at INSTITUTE OF CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE. Department of cardiac surgery, Timisoara, ROMANIA between 1st and 6th of June 2007, to start their OPCAB programme in their center.


Performed three OPCAB procedure- workshop- at THE DEPT. OF CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY, TRIVANDRUM MEDICAL COLLEGE ON 16th an 17th December 2005, to start their OPCAB programme in that center.

He has also conducted workshops at calicut;

CONDUCTED CONFERENCES & VET LABS

Conducted a workshop on OPCAB surgery for 5 Cardiac surgeons who had come from five different parts of China. This was on July 13th to 15th. They had been into the Theatre and discussed the intricacies of OPCAB with him.

The National CME in Cardiac surgery with the Indian association of cardiothoracic & vascular surgeons of India – CTCME 2007, on 22nd and 23rd of September 2007 as the organizing secretary.Nearly 100 Cardiac surgeon attended.

The first annual vet lab on coronary anastamosis- Hands on training- for postgraduates on 4thand 5th of February 2006.Nearly 30 post graduates in Cardiac surgery and Junior cardiac suirgeons attended.

Achievements

  • In July 1999, performed the first Beating Heart Surgery in Bangladesh.
  • Established the Z H Sikder Cardiac Care & Research Centre at the Z H Sikder Women’s Medical College & Hospital Pvt. Ltd. This is a 100- bedded Cardiac Centre attached to the Medical College with more than 600 students.
  • Started the technique of “Total Arterial Revascularizations with Bilateral Mammaries and Bilateral Radials”, and performing them on Beating heart.
  • With the higher incidence of diffusely diseased Coronary Arteries, and that too in the forties age group in Bangladesh, developed the technique of– Mammary Patch Angioplasty on diffusely diseased LAD, without Endarterectomy, on beating heart, which was well appreciated and presented in many international forums.
  • Devised different techniques of stabilizing the heart, using the Octopus, & Guidant stabilisers in different configuration to perform the distal Anastamosis, like the “Double Octopus Technique”, etc.
  • Proximal Anastamosis of grafts without the use of side clamp, in beating Heart Surgery- providing a ‘No -Touch Technique’ on the Aorta, was also started in Dhaka.
