Career
summary
Dr.
Murali P Vettath is a new generation coronary surgeon – one of
the handful of surgeons in the world, performing 100% of his
coronary surgeries on beating heart without the use of Heart
Lung Machine.
He has
been a pioneer and protagonist of this “cutting edge technology”
and has trained numerous surgeons and anaesthesiologists in
the field of cardiac surgery.
He has
16 years post M.Ch experience in Cardiothoracic & Vascular
Surgery, including 8 years as Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Has
performed 4500 plus open heart surgeries with more than 2000 of
them on beating heart for coronary artery bypass surgery.
He has
been trained in coronary artery surgery from Australia, Holland
and Paris and has transferred technology to Bangladesh in the
year 1999. He had stayed in that country for three years and set
up two cardiac centers with a contingent of twenty doctors and a
hundred nurses from India and trained cardiac surgeons,
cardiologist, cardiac anaesthesiologists, cardiac nurses and
paramedical staff in that country.
After
his stint in Dhaka, Bangladesh, he has now settled in Kozhikode,
his home town, at Malabar Institute of Medical sciences,
Kozhikode since 2002.
He had
established Cardiac surgery in this city and in the short span
of six years has brought up MIMS Institute of Cardiac sciences
as a Bench Mark in Cardiac surgery, especially – Beating Heart
surgery – in India and Internationally.
At MIMS,
he has performed more that 2000 cardiac procedures and more than
1300 CABGs on beating heart- OPCAB procedures with less than
0.5% mortality. This center has now been acclaimed as – Centre
of Excellence in OPCAB (off pump coronary artery bypass) surgery
in the country, which gives training to cardiac surgeons from
India and abroad.
He had
come to Kozhikode when all the cardiac patients used to go to
either Coimbatore or Kochi or even Chennai for their cardiac
problems. After establishing this center and after bringing both
adult and pediatric cardiac surgery under one roof, along with
interventional cardiology, he has been instrumental in bringing
MIMS to occupy a top position in the world.
He had
also started the “SAVE A HEART – SAVE A LIFE PROGRAMME’, where
poor patients are provided hundred percent free CABG – bypass
procedure. He has already operated more than fifty such eligible
patients, and fifty more are to follow.
He had
also organized various programmes to bring awareness to people
on cardiac problems and to prevent heart disease, and had
organized public marches on the World Heart Day in 2006 and in
2007 with more than 2000 participants from all walks of life.
Also conducted Heart exhibitions in MIMS,Calicut , and various
other programmes to make people aware of the dangers of Heart
disease.
He has
invented and developed numerous devices for performing beating
heart surgery, which has been published in International
journals .He has also developed indigenous techniques for
performing this procedure with excellent results.
He has
also been a keen researcher in cardiac surgery with many
inventions and innovations to his credit.
Some of his inventions and developments are as follows:

aorta without using the side clamp.

He was
the one to perform the first Beating heart surgery in Bangladesh
in the year 1999.
He has
received numerous awards from different organistaions in India
